Earth Day 2024!

Another school day is upon us. The beautiful weather is giving my students the jitters and summer bug. You know, the “can’t we just have class outside” bug.

Praise the Lord the day is flexible! Nature hike? It’s Earth Day, how about an Earth Day scavenger hunt?

After a scavenger hunt, do the kids need a snack? Apples.

Saving apple seeds is one way to celebrate an unplanned earth day, then look at seeds, roots, flowers and pollination. Other than studying plants, another way to celebrate Earth Day is to transplant starts.

It is easy to find tree starts beginning to grow where they are not wanted in the spring. A simple hand trowel and cardboard box make a great outing. Transplanting trees is a great way to help the environment and the quality of air. (From unwanted plants- parking lots, edges of beach areas that are usually mowed and trails are great places to begin looking!) Let us keep the importance of our environment and God’s beautiful creation alive!

Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, USA longed for environmental awareness and voicing his concerns for the ever deuterating environment. After witnessing the large oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA; he inspired students to move from the anti-war concerns to the environmental issues at hand.

Although Earth Day did not go globally until the 90’s, we must recognize the need for environmental protection began much sooner. Feel free to read more about the history of EARTH DAY, here.

As important as our world around us, we can all agree we could ALL do a better job of keeping it clean. While there is trash from many sources, the evidence is even more apparent along highways and the countryside. When you get the opportunity, just look at a rural area that gets a new convenience store or fast-food store. Within months the ditches are covered in garbage, wrappers and plastic. YUCK!

Teaching our students to reduce, reuse, recycle, (repurpose and regift too) by example and encouragement, we can help make a difference in the lives of future generations!

A great way to encourage and motivate these ideas, is to encourage the beauty and simple enjoyment of creation as well! If we are thankful for God’s creation and appreciate its unique presence, our students will do the same and be more apt to take care of it too.

Happy Earth Day!
