What Must I Do to Be Saved?
Peter begins to deliver a message to the nation of Israel (according to Acts 2:22). Peter tells the nations of Israel about Jesus Christ on that day at Pentecost. Jesus, the one whom they crucified, but God raised from the dead, is alive.
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
(Acts 2:37)
Furthermore, in verse 37, we read the response when the men hear Peter’s message. They ask, “What must we do?”
Peter was very clear and to the point in his response, “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
In Acts chapter 16, we see the response from Paul as he is telling the Philippian jailor what he must do to be saved as well.
“And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and though shalt be saved, and thy house.” Acts 16:30-31
We have to remember the context of both of these men. Peter was preaching to the men of Israel. The “kingdom of heaven” was a promise given to the nation of Israel. Peter was given the keys of heaven, to preach to the nation and was an apostle to the nation of Israel.
Matthew 16:18-19 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
John 8:24 states, “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
Paul writes that he is an apostle to the gentiles. He pens Romans 11:13 and Romans 15:16. Acts 20:24 Paul’s message is the gospel of grace. He makes it so clear to us, gentiles; that we must trust in Christ and what he has done at Calvary to be saved. There is nothing else to do. Not baptism. Not a ceremony. Not works.
“That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,”
Ephesians 1:12-13
AFTER we believe and trust in Christ, there no other requirements, nothing else to do. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
2 Timothy 2:15
