Sunday’s Song: What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Although my purpose for Sunday’s song was to share a new or unfamiliar hymn that has gotten lost in time and publications. Many were never reprinted or were missing key verses. As beautiful as they are, it seems such a shame to not become familiar with their beautiful melodies and sweet messages within. However, with copyright and touchy “sharing” capabilities, my posts were often removed. I am not claiming any of the music I share, but, I also don’t want to stop sharing beautiful music. So, I will go a different way. Personally, I believe there is music and church music. As God commands us in His word, to do things decently and in order; taking a conservative stance on Holy music is often a “gray area” or turn off in many churches. Being more traditional, personally I love hymns!

I hope you enjoy this Sunday’s Song, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”! ***The Links provided are in no way of monetary value or for commission purposes. I just want to share beautiful music currently available. Many Christians and rural ministries have never heard of these names before and/or versions of the beautiful songs they already know and love. Music nurtures the soul with the truth and message it sings!

Sunday’s Song: What A Friend We Have in Jesus

Jesus is the greatest friend we will ever know. Yes, even with the really amazing people I have had the privilege to call my friends. Known as What A Friend in many hymn books, was written as a poem in 1855 by a preacher named Joseph Scriven. He wrote the poem to be a comfort to his mother. Later it was then sung with music composed by Charles C. Converse. A beautiful hymn as a congregational, a choir, or as a music special. This was one of the easiest hymns to find in multiple languages as well. There are many beautiful medleys made with this hymn as well. So without further ado, here is What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

Sunday’s Song: What A Friend We Have in Jesus

What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Sunday’s Song: What A Friend We Have in Jesus

As a sweet congregational with brothers and sisters in the Lord…

Or as a beautiful arrangement, this is arranged by Greg Howlett. You can find more of his amazing pieces here, along with helps, ideas, piano courses and sheet music.

Or like my favorite way to hear this song as a special, on the guitar. This is by Stan Kennedy, which is beautiful and peaceful. Very talented and lovely.

Because I love the guitar version, I also have to recommend Lydia Walker’s guitar solo, because it’s well, just beautiful! I hope it is an inspiration to you as well. As a family or solo, this song that is a beautiful congregational can be a treasured special as well. Lydia Walker’s acoustic music may be purchase HERE.

What a Friend in Jesus is a beautiful hymn as a medley as well. Here is a great medley by David Huntsinger. You can purchase his music here as well.

Last, but not least, on one of my favorite relaxing CD’s for this medley, Beside Still Waters, with panpipes.

I hope and pray your Sunday is filled with God’s goodness and blessings once again this week. Isn’t God so good? What a friend is HE! Lord, make me a blessing!!!

Happy Sunday!
